traffic signals to wastewater treatment plants, the Public Works Department
provides leadership in preparing, building and maintaining the infrastructure
that provides for our community's needs today and for the generations of
tomorrow. Engineering, street maintenance, water and sewer, and sanitation
are four of the key areas the department plans and oversees. Regular operations
include maintaining the wastewater treatment plant, maintaining sewers and
water lines; striping, sweeping and maintaining streets for all weather
conditions; maintaining street and traffic signs; and weed removal. Major
public works projects of late include the upgrade of the sewer treatment
plant, completion of a 6-million gallon water reservoir; shared responsibilities
for the 88th Street-Interstate 5 interchange; and paving and widening of
key streets in Marysville. Maintaining a healthy infrastructure is necessary
for enhancing our quality of life, and sustaining our community for years
to come.
Streets - The Street Division is responsible for maintaining all roads throughout the city to a safe, reliable and efficient condition. The division is also responsible for the maintenance crosswalks, sidewalks and wheelchair ramps assuring the safety of the pedestrian public. Programs include: sweeping, shoulder maintenance (ditching, mowing, herbicide), snow and ice removal, paving, pothole patching, striping, stop bars, and crosswalks. Solid Waste - The Solid Waste Division is responsible for the solid waste collection and disposal as well as the recycling program in the city. Utility Maintenance - The division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water distribution and sewer collection systems, including wells, reservoirs and pumping stations. Responsibilities also include water quality sampling and testing per the Dept. of Health requirements. The division is also tasked with reading all water meters as well as handling customer complaints/concerns regarding water and sanitary sewer issues. The division provides off hour and weekend (standby) coverage for the water and sewer utility. Programs include: Line Flushing; Valve exercising; Hydrant maintenance; Reservoir inspection and maintenance; Well inspection (drawdown and production); Pipeline inspection; Purity testing; Sampling; Record keeping; Monthly reports; Consumer Confidence Report; Conservation program. Construction - The Public Works Construction Division is responsible for the installation of water services, main extensions, hydrants, valves, vaults, side sewers and sanitary sewer extensions. The division also replaces aging water and sewer mains and is tasked with utility locates. Programs include: Misc. projects ($30,000) limit; Install new hydrants; Replace existing hydrants (aging or broken); Water main infill; Sewer main infill. Wastewater Treatment - The division is responsible for protecting the environment by ensuring that the wastewater is properly collected and treated prior to discharge to the receiving stream, by meeting or exceeding the State of Washington standards, as set by the Department of Ecology. Clerical & Customer Relations - Provides clerical support to Public Works; Maintain required files/recordkeeping; Regulatory documentation/correspondence; Customer contact (Counter, Phone and written); Customer Relations Representative. Fleet/Facilities - Responsible for acquisition and maintenance of 257 pieces of equipment as well as maintenance of 58 city-owned buildings and facilities. Engineering - Consists of three groups: Capital Improvements, Surface Water, and Traffic Engineering. Capital Improvements - Responsibilities include: Develop Comprehensive Plans; Develop 6 yr. TIP & Utilities CIP; Project Management; Manage LID’s & ULID’s; Pavement Mgmt. Program; Misc. Projects Design/Inspection; Document & Records Keeping Surface Water - Responsibilities include: Develop & Implement NPDES Phase II; Review Drainage Plans for Land Dev.; Develop 6 year SW CIP; Inspect Detention Facilities; Inspect & Inventory Culvert Conditions; Manage Grant Funding; Implement Surface Water Program BMP’s. Traffic Engineering - Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the traffic control system (i.e. traffic signals, beacons, street lighting) and the installation and maintenance of street and traffic signs.
