Long-time advocate for people with disabilities honored as Volunteer of the Month

Jim Strickland was honored by Mayor Jon Nehring with the Volunteer of the Monthaward at the April 24 Marysville City Council meeting.

Strickland,a teacher at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, has been teaching students with disabilities for the past 27 years. His knowledge, influence and work to improve our community extends long beyond the school day, however.

"Jim has long advocated for - and continues to work toward – programs that would offer services such as life skills, job training and recreational opportunities to people with special needs into adulthood, after many ‘age out’ of the current system,” Mayor Nehring said. “Jim is a mentor and friend to countless current and former students.”

His current volunteer work includes:

·        Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities

·        Marysville Diversity Advisory Committee

·        Marysville Community Lunch -- Board of Directors, President

·        Marysville Hunger and Homelessness Organization (Marysville H2O)

·        Monthly open mic at Alfy's for Life Skills students and graduates

·        ASCEND -- advocating for Student Centered Education

·        Club advisor for MPHS student chapter of People First of Washington

In the past, Strickland also volunteered for:

·        Cinco de Mayo Community Celebration

·        Marysville Youth Action Network

·        Strawberry City Jam Community Open Mic

·        Quilceda Community Services

·        Marysville Historical Society

·        National League of Democratic Schools
