Two women who bring kindness to middle school lunch periods were honored by Mayor Jon Nehring as Volunteers of the Month at the April 23 meeting of the Marysville City Council.
Renee Bigwarfe and Betty Wright have been volunteering at Marysville Middle School for the past two years, spending about five hours each school day assisting at lunches for students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. During those lunchtimes, Bigwarfe and Wright pay attention to details and what is happening with the students around them. When students are sitting alone, they go and talk with them. They often buy food for kids who do not have a lunch. Through their interactions with students, they have built relationships and helped maintain a calm atmosphere.
"It is really great to have extra help at school," said Diane Tillman, a substitute teacher who nominated them for the Volunteer of the Month award.
In addition, both Bigwarfe and Wright are PTSA members. This year Wright is also volunteering in a school science class, and Bigwarfe previously volunteered at he son's elementary school in Florida.
"Your contribution are making a positive impact each and every day with the students at Marysville Middle School," Mayor Jon Nehring said. "Thank you for all you do the Marysville and the youth in our community."
