Marysville police bridge community gaps through direct aid program

Behind the Scenes Posted on January 22, 2025

When a victim of human trafficking needs immediate shelter, or a stranded visitor can't afford fuel to get home, Marysville police officers now have a direct way to help. Through the BlueBridge Alliance program, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit initiative, officers are equipped with resources that provide immediate emergency assistance to residents in crisis.

"Our team is committed to providing outstanding service in partnership with our community to enhance our city's safety, growth and livability," said Marysville Police Chief Erik Scairpon.

Officers are provided prepaid debit cards and comprehensive resources, including secure mobile banking, technology, policies and training materials. MPD officers using these cards have already utilized over $1,100 in transportation assistance and more than $770 in emergency housing for community members in crisis.

"The Bluebridge Program is designed to provide immediate relief for individuals in crisis," explains Police Officer Raye Liffrig, recently named BlueBridge Alliance Program Champion for Program Values. In one notable case, Officer Liffrig used her BlueBridge card to secure immediate safety for a human trafficking victim, providing hotel accommodations, toiletries, food and transportation in collaboration with the FBI.

Police Officer Amanda Stewart, named Individual Agency Program MVP, demonstrates how the program meets diverse community needs. When responding to a domestic violence call, Officer Stewart helped a mother and children who had left home without their belongings after an assault. "I was able to help her and her children get essential items, since we didn't know when she would be able to go back to the property. The woman was able to grab all kinds of essentials, like clothing and food, with the help of the BlueBridge Card."

Officer Stewart was also able to help victims of a rental scam who had lost their savings. "The victims had nothing left until payday," Officer Stewart recalls. "I provided a hotel room for two nights until they could make some phone calls and borrow funds to rent a new place."

Police Officer Jessie Glenn highlights how the program transforms traditional police interactions. "This program has allowed me to build relationships with members of the community who may not have had the best opinion of officers in the past," Officer Glenn says. "I've been able to put a woman in a hotel room who was a victim of abuse, buy medical supplies for someone unable to obtain them themselves and provide clothing for those who might otherwise resort to theft."

The BlueBridge program allows officers to provide immediate, meaningful assistance. Community members can support these vital interventions by making an online donation at www.marysvillewa.gov/donate.
